COPE began in the Bronx in the late 1970s, claimed the 4 line, then went all city. More than four decades later, COPE2 is still in the game—painting throw-ups on trains, walls, and canvas. Crossed out, repeated, and argued over, the name has never left the culture that produced it.
Clothing brands and video games extended the form. The name became recognizable far beyond graffiti. COPE2 is the source. Graffiti is the form.
